  • Hemp Shield Application Tips

Here are a few things to remember when applying Hemp Shield Deck Finish.
    1. On application, Hemp Shield may appear cloudly or milky - it will quickly become clear.
    2. Hemp Shield penetrates wood deeply and is designed for single coat use. Second coat applications are not recommended.
    3. To avoid stainig, do not allow excess material or pudding to remain on the surface after finishing.

Southern Belle — Porch Comes Alive With Hemp Shield

Across the South, porches, docks, decks, gazebos, and outdoor furniture have long been crafted from wood of the native Cypress tree. Water resistant, with distictive grain patterns and warm brown color, cypress is a Southern construction trademark.
As the "before" photo shows, this classic wrap-around porch was structurally sound — cypress logs submerged for over 100 years have been sawn into construction lumber — but the wood was tired, dry and dull.

After cleaning and surface preparation, Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer in "Clear" formulation was applied, resulting in the restored finish shown in the "after" photograph.

Although cypress will repel water for decades, Hemp Shield's penetrating hemp oil formula soaks deep into the wood's cell structure, protecting and beautifying wood from the inside out. Because Hemp Shield works from within the wood, rather than just by forming a surface coating, Hemp Shield's protection is only removed by wearing down the wood itself.

Non-toxic, formaldahyde free, UV resistant, eco-friendly Hemp Shield products provide deep soaking, long lasting protection and beauty for a wide range of wood types, even extremely dense species like cypress.

Cedar Home Gets New Look With Hemp Shield

After standing unprotected for several years, the Johnson’s classic two-story bat and board cedar home had lost its luster. Gray from weathering and stained by tannin, “the place just looked sad,” remarked the homeowner.
Then the transformation began. First a pressure washer removed years of accumulated dirt and tannin stains, Then the home was finished with Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer in “Cedar” to unify the wood colors with a rich, warm tone while protecting their home for years to come.

Hemp Shield’s eco-friendly, non-toxic formula was also important to the Johnson’s. “Along with the house, we have several other cedar sided buildings on the property that we refinished too, so we didn’t want to use a finish that would release toxics around our home as it dissolved,” Mr. Johnson said.
"Besides, the place doesn't look like new — it looks better than brand new. The wood has a warn color and the grain is much more visible than before," Mrs. Johnson added.

Artist Finishes Creations With Hemp Shield Wood Finish

Like many contemporary artists, ITA, an artist associated with the NYU Art Department, was searching for safe, eco-friendly wood finishes when he discovered that Hemp Shield not only met those standards, it improved the appearance of his finished artwork.

Currently, ITA is developing multi-function furniture based on sculptural forms. The stool pictured here replicates a pottery storage jar in wood, with the removable seat accessing the interior. "Your product has been really working wonders for me. what I have done that works well is creating a wood grain that has more depth and looks more realistic. "

"Hello, We Would Like To Talk About Finishing Our Deck"

Ann and Gerry called the Hemp Shield Customer Service Center with a few simple questions about using Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer to protect their new "deck".
After discussing coverage and colors, the DIY couple promised to send a few photos of their finished "deck".
Two weeks later, the photos published here arrived, showcasing their "deck", actually a fully equiped outdoor living room! The "deck" is outfitted with a swing, hammock, futon, cooler, flat screen TV, gas grill, and enough tables and chairs to seat eight for dinner.

To protect and beautify their creation, Ann and Gerry chose "Clear" formula Hemp Shield fpr the cedar stairs and deck, and finished the cedar lattice walls, gates and rails with Hemp Shield's "Chestnut" color. In vertical uses like the cedar lattice walls, Hemp Shield's protection can last 6 or more years, while the deck can expect 3 to 3-1/2 years of protection from damage due to UV, water, algae, mildew, and fungus.
Appropriately, the home of Ann, Gerry, and their beautiful outdoor living room is Happy Valley, Oregon.

New Growth From Old Lumber In Burbank Country

Located in the fertile valleys north of San Francisco Bay, the town of Sebastopol, California has a rich history of agricultural experimentation. Sebastopol is the site of Luther Burbank's Gold Ridge Experimental Farm, and today the Permaculture Skills Center (PSC) researches, develops, and teaches regenerative agricultural methods less than three miles from Burbank's pioneering farmstead.
The result of an act that project director Joseph Antaree described as "communal free enterprise", this fall PSC sprouted an unusual flower — a modified geodesic dome greenhouse built from recycled lumber and protected with Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer.
The dome — chosen for maximum internal space with the smallest footprint and quantity of materials possible — is plumbed and vented to permit year-round production of seedlings, grafts, and clones for the teaching farm, and will be used in the PSC's Advanced Permaculture Apprenticeship program. Project director Joseph Antaree shows off the finished structure.

Picnic Table Shines With Hemp Shield Wood Finish

Using standard grade Douglas Fir planks, ready made folding legs, and Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer, Chris Duncan created a beautiful backyard picnic table for his family.
Chris credits careful choice and assembly of materials for his DIY table's stable costruction, low cost, and outstanding appearance.
"Selecting the boards and arranging them to match the grain and color variations was important to the look," Chris explained. Basic as the construction is, he was careful to keep the planks tight and level during assembly. "Clamping the boards together and level when putting cross-members on the back makes the best looking surface for finishing."
To protect and beautify his creation, Chris chose Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer in Hickory shade. "The Hemp Shield was just what I wanted in water protection and safety of use, and the color and satin finish transformed that plain Jane doug fir into a glowing wood surface."

Hemp Shield Restores Luster To Historic Resort's Wood

The Telemark Resort and Convention Center in Cable, Wisconsin chose Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer™ as the primary wood finish for a complete renovation of the main lodge..
Historic Telemark Resort and Convention Center, the largest nordic ski area in northwestern Wisconsin, had seen better days. The lodge is impressively clad in old growth tounge-and-groove cedar paneling, with massive exposed supporting beams and delicate framing around 2-story floor-to-ceiling windows. Even casual areas like the Guest's Laundry are cedar paneled in the 'board-and-bat' style of the American Frontier. However, over 50 years of continuous use had left their mark. Years of accumulated dust and smoke, and the residue of repeated cleaning had left the once lustrous finish dull and lifeless, the wood's rich tones and complex grains hidden from Telemark's guests.
Then in 2011, the resort's management committed to a total restoration and upgrade of the lodge, as well as new world class Nordic ski trails and other facilities to compliment Telemark's status as the official American Berkibeiner Nordic Course. As part of the makeover, the resort staff chose Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer™ to bring new life to their treasured cedar paneling.

Telemark's staff was introduced to Hemp Shield™ by Ken Anderson, owner of Original Green Distribution, Hemp Shield's leading commercial distributor. Original Green Distribution supplied Telemark with Hemp Shield™ products and advised on application techniques for the restoration.
Telemark Resort's Managing General Partner, Ric Ahern, spoke about their experience:

"Telemark Resort in Northern Wisconsin recently started a renovation of our main lodge building. We researched wood finishes and sealers that would provide a lasting and economical solution for our cedar interior and exterior surfaces. We also wanted a product that was chemical-free and easy to apply.
"We ordered 200 gallons of Hemp Shield™. We found the application to be easy and the coverage to be greater than expected.
"All of our expectations were exceeded. We will continue to use Hemp Shield™ as we refinish the exterior of the lodge and look forward to working with Hemp Shield™."

Wood Sculpture Gets New Life Sealed With Hemp Shield

David Gonzales, an artist/sculptor in Manitou Springs, Colorado, had a talent — and a problem.

Carving logs, stumps, and even whole trees in the dry climate of the Colorado Rockies, his finished works often suffered severe cracking. A life-long sensitivity to the volatile chemicals found in major brand wood sealers lead David to Hemp Shield™ when a major commission — a pine tree carved top to bottom — began to crack.

    David's story:
"I have been carving for many years, and I am extremely sensitive to toxins and smells. I carve with electric chainsaws and I only work with earth-friendly paints and sealants, which is what first interested me in Hemp Shield™.

"I was hired to carve a 17 foot pine tree with a hawk, 4 raccoons, and 2 bears. In Colorado the weather is dry and it is typical of pine to crack as I am working, which is what occurred while carving this particular commissioned piece.

"Hoping to find a product that would penetrate the wood deeply and curb the cracking,I decided that I would go out on a limb and try something new — Hemp Shield™. After I painted the carving, there were numerous cracks throughout the piece. I began to apply the Hemp Shield™ and noticed that the cracks began to close up. I have never seen a wood sealer work in this way and I have tried many that are on the market today.

"The person who hired me to do the carving was ecstatic because the Hemp Shield™ rectified 95% of the cracks in the wood. I called several months later to see if there were any cracks occurring within the wood and there were none. This astonished me because usually some cracking does occur, especially outdoors in the hot sun. Since then, I have ordered several gallons for my wood carving projects. On so many levels, I am utterly impressed with how well Hemp Shield™ works."

Hemp Shield Creates "New" Wood From Old Scrap

During a summer home renovation project, removing an old concrete wall left a stairway exposed and in need of a bannister.
Using on-hand materials to minimize cost — pressure treated 4X4's, and both Douglas Fir and Redwood lumber — the result was a railing that was sturdy, but mis-matched and unfinished in appearance. That was when the contractor chose Hemp Shield to protect and beautify his work.

"The bannister was solid as a rock, but it looked like it was slapped together, with some wood stained from treatment, some new, some old," the builder related.
"I'd used Hemp Shield before, and it was just what the property owner wanted — safe, long lasting protection, and a rich, clean color that didn't hide the grain. The color tied the whole thing together, and it made that scrap wood look new."

47 Year Old Cedar Siding Renewed With Hemp Shield

During a summer home renovation project, removing an old concrete wall left a stairway exposed and in need of a bannisterPaul Petock sealed and colored his home's siding with Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer™ last year. This is his Hemp Shield™experience:
"I own a custom built house overlooking the McKenzie river in Oregon. The house is sided with 1'' thick cedar. I was looking for a product to reseal and stain the house with.
"The house was built in 1964 and has not been stained from its construction. After much research I went with Hemp Shield™ with a chestnut color.
"I was surprised how well the product covered the weathered wood, and happy how little it took to cover the entire house. It was also a simple clean up with soap and water. I like your product so well I will be using the clear on my interior redwood walls.
    "Thanks Hemp Shield."

An Original Installer's Hemp Shield Experience

Teak companionway doors on a custom built Dutch Staten yatch are shown in the process of receiving a coat of "Clear" Hemp Shield Wood Finish and Deck Sealer™.

Installer — Barry B., Veneta, Oregon
    Application Date — August 28, 2010
"Our deck is cedar, 20 years old, with no cover. Painting is my least favorite home maintenance job, so the deck hasn't been treated in about 10 years."
"When I started putting on the Hemp Shield, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to apply. The deck wood was so dry it sucked up the Hemp Shield like a sponge. Like I said, I'm not much of a painter, so there were plenty of drips and splashes, especially from the railings. Even after a half hour of sitting, the drips, splashes and other mistakes, like where I walked on wet boards, disappeared completely when I went over them with the Hemp Shield. Even though I put it on during a hot summer day there were no overlap marks from the roller."

"Other things I like about Hemp Shield is it barely changed the wood's color — what I expect from a product sold as "clear" — and when it rained last week the deck wasn't slippery at all. Also, the cleanup was about the easiest I've had painting. I hardly needed soap, except to make sure the brushes and roller were completely cleaned." Additional Comments — August, 2011 “After a year of exposure to Willamette Valley weather, Hemp Shield is still protecting my deck. The best thing I've noticed long term is that the deck is not slippery when wet, a big problem with every other deck sealer that I've used." Additional Comments — August, 2012 "After two years, the single coat Hemp Shield is working fine. Because of the fir needles and rain, with every other deck sealer I've used, I'd be thinking about re-coating the whole deck. And it's still not slippery."
